My father Clyde came to mind when I read this delightful quote. Everyone he met was his friend, and it was especially true when it came to the service industry. His appreciation of their attention showed by his tipping largesse and turning his winning smile on them. Wherever we went, folks bent over backwards to accommodate his every need!
When I was a kid, one of my favorite memories is of us walking into the lobby of Hotel Le Meurice in Paris. The entire staff lit up when he crossed the threshold; calling out his name, hand shakes, hugs, and merry smiles all around. The elevator operator even shut down the elevator to attend to Clyde’s first request upon landing anywhere – ice for his cocktails! Haha!
One day, when we were living in Florida, the doorbell rang. When I answered it, the fellow standing on the threshold introduced himself and followed it up with, “I’m a bartender at The Men’s Bar of The Biltmore in New York. Clyde always told me that if I was ever in Florida to look him up!”
Clyde came striding around the corner, right arm and hand extended in friendship! “Harry,” he said, “Good to see you! Come on in and have a drink!”
Yup that was my old man! A winner through and through…~*
